N.B. ASLEF MEMBERS SHOULD READ ASLEF'S ADVICE TO MEMBERS FOR ENROLLING ON TUC COURSES BEFORE APPLYING. AN EXTRACT FROM THE RELEVANT CIRCULAR IS SHOWN ON THIS PAGE. ASLEF's Advice To
Members For Enrolling On ASLEF encourages all Representatives and Health and Safety Representatives to enrol on TUC Stage 1 and Stage 2 Representatives or Health and Safety Representatives courses as soon as they are able to do so. Head Office Circular no 430/1999 set out the procedures to be followed in respect of all TUC Day Release courses:- 1. Head Office will supply all Branch Secretaries with TUC Regional education booklets giving details of the forthcoming courses available and these should be made known and distributed to branch members. 2. Representatives wishing to attend should complete the application form as soon as possible and hand it to the Branch Secretary who must stamp it with the branch stamp and submit it immediately, in writing, direct to the appropriate TUC Regional Education office. 3. Representatives wishing to attend TUC day release courses will be expected to submit their applications for paid release direct to Local Management and where problems arise to seek the assistance of their Company Council representative, or the District Secretary as appropriate. 4. Branch Secretaries must advise Head Office when representatives attend courses and forward details of all courses completed and any credits gained. A record will be kept of all this information on members so that correct assessments can be made on further education needs. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT FOR ALL BRANCH SECRETARIES TO FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES If Branch Secretaries require copies of the TUC Courses booklet please contact Julie Weekes, Education and Training Organiser at Head Office (email juliew@aslef.org.uk). TUC Education provides training for more than 40,000 union representatives, Health & Safety representatives and union learning representatives each year. They offer high quality training through a network of TUC approved providers across the UK where learners achieve nationally recognised educational credits and awards. TUC Courses encourage everyone to learn in a friendly, supportive
environment, usually in surroundings designated for trade union courses. Courses
are offered flexibly to suite the needs of union representatives and through the
traditional day release model.
