It's Time to Talk Training
July 2008

The TUC, CBI, Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) have launched good practice guidance to promote workplace dialogue on training.

"New recruits or those experiencing difficulties often turn to more senior colleagues or their union representative for help and guidance. As our case studies show, the best performing organisations create a learning culture where such mutual assistance and support becomes second nature to everybody. Such cultures are not created by accident: they occur where managers actively talk to their workforce about training matters and listen to their views on what is needed, ensuring that workforce diversity is taken into account".

Right to Request Time to Train

The Government has announced that it will be introducing a new legal right for employees in England to request time to train from their employer and that this will be modelled on the existing right to request flexible working. The Prime Minister made the announcement on 14th May in a statement to the House of Commons setting out the Government's draft legislative programme for 2008/09.

The TUC welcomed the announcement, saying that it could help millions improve their skills and boost productivity but that it will pose a real challenge to those employers who neglect training.

Learn at Work

Learning in the workplace is a great way to get back into learning. It can be convenient, flexible and help you progress in your ambitions.

Many people are assisted by their employer, trade union or local college – in lots of cases these parties come together for the benefit of learners at work.

With changing technologies and new ways of working, employers need to make sure employees are confident in their skills and knowledge.

Union learning is also growing. By 2010 there will be 22,000 Union Learning Representatives across the country promoting training and learning in the workplace on behalf of union members.
